Hodopathy Documentation Method

A Responsible Framework for Recording Indigenous Knowledge

The Hodopathy Documentation Method provides a structured process for recording the oral, cultural, botanical and ecological knowledge associated particularly with the Ho community and other Adivasi communities of Jharkhand.

The method is designed to preserve knowledge accurately while respecting community identity, contributor choice, confidential traditions and biodiversity.

Documentation is not simply the act of writing down a plant name or recording an interview. A reliable record must explain:

  • Who shared the knowledge
  • Where the knowledge developed
  • In which language it was communicated
  • How the information was obtained
  • Whether the contributor permitted publication
  • Whether the plant identity has been verified
  • What scientific evidence is available
  • What information must remain restricted

Stage 1: Define the Documentation Purpose

Before beginning fieldwork, the purpose and boundaries of the documentation activity should be clearly defined.

The project team should establish:

  • The languages required

Stage 13: Protect Geographical Information

Location data can support botanical and conservation research, but it can also expose plants and communities to risk.

The record may separate location information into:

Research Location

More detailed information accessible only to approved researchers.

Restricted Location

Precise information protected because of rarity, sacred significance, community preference or exploitation risk.

Exact coordinates should never be published automatically.

Stage 14: Transcription

The original recording should be transcribed as accurately as possible.

The transcription record should include:

Laboratory Evidence

Findings from chemical, biological or safety testing.

Clinical Evidence

Evidence from appropriately designed human research.

Established Conclusion

Traditional documentation must not be relabelled as clinical evidence.

Stage 17: Scientific Literature Review

After botanical identification, the research team may examine reliable scientific literature related to the plant.

A Method Built on Trust

The quality of Hodopathy documentation will depend not only on cameras, forms, databases or scientific names. It will depend on trust.

Knowledge holders must be able to understand the process, control what they share and see their contributions represented accurately. Researchers must distinguish evidence from assumption. Botanists must communicate uncertainty honestly. Documentarians must protect both people and biodiversity.
